THE QUARTER CENTENARY NEIGHBORHOOD AND ITS NEIGHBORING NEIGHBORHOODS.
We understand the neighborhood as the set of dwellings that constitute, from the urban point of view, a unit with its own identity and, from the social point of view, a kind of micro community with features that allow us to attribute certain particular characteristics that differentiate them from other neighborhoods that make up the city.
It is the area where it is possible for everyone who inhabits it to have a direct relationship, in which infants weave their first social networks outside the strictly family nucleus and therefore in those years when interpersonal relationships were more real than virtual, the Barrio played a much more transcendent role in shaping each person’s universe.
This is the case of the IV Centenario neighborhood, whose construction does not obey an isolated effort, but rather was projected in the third decade of the 20th century within a master plan for the development of Arequipa and that should make it possible for the city to It will arrive at its fourth centenary (1940) of foundation as a city that, looking at its past, will project itself towards a future marked by sustainable progress.
Thus, a team of notable professionals, duly articulated and supported by a municipality presided over by truly remarkable authorities, planned and executed a series of infrastructure works of enormous importance for the city, which at that time was already approaching 90,000 inhabitants.
Within this great project, in the framework of the decades from 1920 to 1960, the construction of the Municipal Theater, the Arequipa Coliseum, the Municipal Library, the working-class neighborhoods 1 and 2, the expansion and construction of fundamental avenues such as Av. . Independencia, Jorge Chávez and later Av. Venezuela, the consolidation of the Industrial Park and the establishment of an urban area that privileges nature and the landscape over concrete, the houses around an important green area that represents the Selva Alegre Park and the surrounding urbanization, an area also equipped with a magnificent hotel for tourists, an activity that, although it was incipient for the time, was already projected as an activity of great importance.
It is within this special context that the construction of this urbanization is planned and executed, which would be built at the same time, with the idea of saving costs, consisting of single-family homes of a mesocratic character, articulated around an open central area that would be the one that it would occupy the Melgar Stadium, a true emblem of the city.
Indeed, the city would reach its four hundred years of life with many of these works completed and others well under way in what could be considered one of the times of greatest development and best efficient work of its authorities.
Since then, the neighborhood has been consolidated as one of the most traditional, its life is intimately linked to that of the stadium, which began to be the scene of sports competitions, particularly football matches, it has been increasing its fame and it has become a Winery certainly endearing to the locals.
